Forceful Eject Disc

This is a simple and effective way to eject discs that are being stubborn and won’t eject using any other method. Please be advised that this may also eject discs that you do not necessarily want to be ejected, such as mounted images besides optical discs (CD and DVD) as well as other devices.

Forceful Eject Disc is released completely free of charge but is provided “as-is” without any guarantee or warranty of any kind whether express or implied. Forceful Eject Disc (or “FED” for short,) is distributed with two types. The actual application that you can drag and drop to your Applications folder, execute it from the image or copy it anywhere you wish. The second is an OS X Installer that guides you through the installation process.

This is something that I tossed together when I was having issues trying to eject a disc that was actually never in the system, oops. But it does also eject images that are mounted along with discs that are in the drive, could be useful to some. Please keep in mind that this was also developed on Mac OS X 10.7.

You may download Forceful Eject Disc (or “FED” for short) here.

Firefox Better Surfing

This document aims to serve two main purposes, security and a better experience surfing the internet. You are more than welcome to comment and offer feedback, even opinions about other products that do the same or better than what’s mentioned in this document.

This document is provided for use with Firefox for Linux, OS X and Windows unless it is stated otherwise differently. If there are enough requests for a different browser, an updated version of this document may be published for that specific browser.

There is no one-stop solution when it comes to a web browser, at least not that I am aware of. This said, you must be aware that this is a multiple tier setup, that takes a few minutes to setup and you’re good to go from that point after.

This document will be updated, as new content is available.

Advertisement Battleground

Let’s face the facts; the internet is a full-blown battleground when it comes to advertising and marketing schemes. It’s also one of the most known methods to get a product or service known. However, advertising has become more abusive and intrusive over the years, especially if you’re on limited bandwidth and/or a slow system. To eliminate most, if not all advertising on a site, we have many options that are available to us, and are completely free.

This also goes without saying that some sites have opted in to preventing content from being shown to you due to these methods and techniques, but thankfully for the ability to “white list” sites and domains, you can allow that specific site and domain while keeping the others at bay.

First we have a very popular plugin called NoScript Security Suite that is available for free at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/, and offers a nice deal of protection, and is one of the very first extensions that I personally install on any new installation of Firefox. As you will see on the URL, it helps by protecting you from being click-jacked and XSS attacks, and comes in handy more often then you would think otherwise.

Secondly, we have AdBlock Plus, which blocks and prevent those annoying video advertisements from showing up, and can be installed completely free of charge at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/. This is not only good to conserve your precious bandwidth, but can also speed up your surfing speeds and system. Another good thing is if you have a person or people sleeping nearby, those annoying video advertisements won’t wake up anyone up, because they won’t play.

Third, and certainly not last item that will be mentioned, we have Flashblock that is available for free at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/flashblock/. This plugin for Firefox makes sure that Flash items are not played automatically, so again you’ll save on precious resources and bandwidth, and not have to worry about security risks and issues that are related to Flash as much. And while Flash is a dying technology that will eventually never be used, it’s still actively used at the time of the creation of this document. It’s better safe than sorry, right?

Encrypted Connectivity

The chances are that when you’re connecting to a web site, that you’re probably using HTTP and not HTTPS. When you’re accessing a site that uses HTTPS, it’s assumed that everything is and must be encrypted, but the truth be told, HTTPS can also access and delivery content from HTTP, usually warning you that some content is not encrypted and may not be safe.

Here are some but not all examples:

  1. You can access a site to create an account and use that account on both HTTP and HTTPS based connections, but HTTPS is the recommended method.
  2. You can access the site through HTTP and create and access the account on HTTPS connections, which is slightly more secure and preferred.
  3. You can access the site to create and use an account over HTTPS without any HTTP use, which is the best practice. However, any content that HTTPS uses that’s from HTTP, can give the wrong impression.

Now with keeping on the subject, “Encrypted Connectivity”, many sites such as America Online, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo! And many others can be accessed using both methods, HTTP and HTTPS. When you access a site, say for example, Facebook, you could easily use http://www.facebook.com/ or you could equally use https://www.facebook.com/ and get the same content, and use the service as you normally would on either connection type. The same applies to the others mentioned in this document, and for many others.

What if you’re used to typing just “www” or “http://www” and the site? Sure they’ll both default you to the HTTP, unless it’s set by preference, or they force HTTPS on to you, but what if they don’t? There’s a nice extension for Firefox called HTTPS Everywhere. You can download, install and use it completely free of charge directly from https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere.

Excerpt from eff.org, “HTTPS Everywhere is produced as a collaboration between The Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site. The HTTPS Everywhere extension fixes these problems by using clever technology to rewrite requests to these sites to HTTPS. Information about how to access the project’s Git repository and get involved in development is here.

Steam Games (Free to Play)

This is a list of games that I actively play on Steam, where you’re more than welcome to send me a friend request if you wish at http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197977873665. I will be adding more games to this list, but just wanted to get the ones I play mostly on here.

** ADDED 10-09-2015 – NOT A FREE ITEM **: Ballistic Overkill has launched as Early Access on http://store.steampowered.com/app/296300/ — This is a fast paced first person shooter that has console quality graphics, but designed for your PC and Mac systems. Please keep in mind that Early Access does not mean it’s the final product, and as such, it should be expected to experience issues and other problems that are known or unknown at this time.

America’s Army: Proving Grounds is the official game of the U.S. Army and part of the highly acclaimed America’s Army game series. This free military game focuses on small unit tactical maneuvers and puts you to the test in new America’s Army maps as well as AA fan favorites Hospital and Bridge.

CABAL Online is a 3rd person 3D role playing game that will put you in a graphically vivid world of non-stop hack & slash action. Designed to let everyone play, CABAL Online runs even on older computers while still maintaining its scintillating action scenes, lifelike environments, ornate decorations, detailed characters, and non-stop fast action.

Dirty Bomb: It is 2020 and the once great city of London stands abandoned after a mysterious disaster, a dilapidated shell of its former self. Now the streets of London are the playground of Private Military Companies (PMCs) who battle to control the city’s abandoned riches. After all, what’s a little radiation sickness when there’s money to be made?

Battles take place not between dozens of troops, but thousands; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Whether in open fields, tightly packed urban centers or enormous structures, planning, teamwork and communication are essential.

PlanetSide 2 features incredible continent maps with dozens of square kilometers of seamless gameplay space; every inch of which is hand-crafted, contestable space. With the territorial control meta-game, landmass has intrinsic value.

The year is 2020. The European Union has collapsed. The United States, in an effort to revitalize their anemic economy, has withdrawn from the geopolitical stage. China and Russia have moved to fill the vacuum of power left behind.

Worse, a group of degenerate Xanthids, extraterrestrial creatures that escaped from an Andromeda prison colony, have taken refuge in the depths of Antarctica. Attempts to communicate have proven impractical, and they have begun to instigate skirmishes elsewhere as they seek to expand their territory—a highly classified problem kept tightly under-wraps by the world’s governments.

Though each nation preaches about the benefits of peace and stability, the political structure of the world has crumbled. Nations jockey for power behind the backs of their citizens, and the slightest political misstep could end in nothing less than mutually assured destruction—or a complete alien takeover. The second Cold War has dawned.

However, when war is fought behind the scenes, the only warriors are the elite. Delta Force, GAFE, Spetsnaz, and their brethren—these brave soldiers control the future, delicately maintaining the balance between the world powers through shadowy operations and confidential weaponry.

The world is their battlefield. Live or die, their existence will be disavowed by the very nations they protect. Succeed or fail, their heroism will never be known.

They are the world’s special forces.

Warface offers an intense Co-op experience with daily new content, in which players can master unique teamwork moves and gameplay styles. They can also engage in fast-paced or tactical action in Versus modes such as Team Death Match or Plant The Bomb.

I’ll add more games later on, there are quite a few other free to play games that are of good quality and worth many hours of playing. You’re more than welcome to recommend games that should appear on this list, and I will add them as well, but only if they are the same or better quality.

Apparently, it’s not just an isolated issue with Windows 10.

I’m not sure if every edition of Windows 10 faces this problem, but for fact Windows 10 Pro suffers from it. After using Windows 10 for a while, certain things suddenly stop working, such as the Start Menu, Cortana, and perhaps a couple other things as well. I quickly went searching for a fix for this, and low and behold, there is a temporary fix for it.

However, I’ve not yet had the chance to try it out, but I am certain that I will by the weeks end. When the problem does arise again, I will certainly have a chance to test this out. To be honest, I am not a fan of publishing stuff without first testing it, so if you should download and use this, please report back whether it works or does not work for you. Please also understand that I did not develop this, I simply grabbed code from two sources and put them together to hopefully make everyone’s life easier.

# Self elevating code from http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/09/23/a-self-elevating-powershell-script.aspx

Please make sure you backed up your system prior to using this, as it could cause damage to your system. It has been executed without the need, and everything appears to be working without any issues or problems. You will also see “red messages” which according to bidnessetc.com, is nothing to worry about.

Windows 10 (App Store) Error 0x803f7003

You’ve just installed Microsoft Windows 10 from a clean installation, an upgrade or after a while, you just started getting an error that is listed as “0x803f7003”, it can be quite annoying. You can easily fix and resolve that problem by performing the following steps:

  1. Close and make sure that the Windows App Store is completely closed and not running.
  2. Type in the “Search the web and Windows”, or press the Windows key and R at the same time.
  3. Type the “wsreset.exe” and press enter, allowing it to run completely.

This will clean the cache of the store, and should correct any problems resulting from that. You may need to reboot your system. This may or may not solve the problem every time, but can help.

CharlieWARE SOFTWARE Client released!

The CharlieWARE SOFTWARE Client is now available for download, including the complete source code to the client application. The client requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed to operate, and the source code requires you to have Microsoft Visual Basic .NET 2010 or Visual Studio .NET 2010 installed to build the executables from the source code.

I’ve been thinking about it for a while now, what type of license should the CharlieWARE SOFTWARE Client be placed under once it was released, and I’ve decided to open source it with the BSDv3 license. This decision to release this as an open source project was made so others could also join in and help with the development, or even build their own project based off this software’s source code.

This decision was also made in hopes that others can help contribute to the software, while being able to focus on other parts of the site, and other projects. This does not mean I am dropping the client or abandoning the project either, but it’s there so you can see that it is in fact, a reality. 🙂

Game Booster (Batch File) Released.

I’ve released a package tonight that contains two files, which allow you to stop services that are running so you can play your games with better performance, and when you’re done gaming, to start those services again.

Please understand that these files are written for the Windows 7 platform in mind, and Windows 8/8.1 have had a couple service names changed. There is a small chance that these files by default, may not be aware of those names and do nothing as a result. It is also recommended that you know how batch files work, as these files are provided “as-is” without guarantee or warranty.

Game Booster (Batch Files)

I may also start working on an actual application that I had started to develop over a year and a half ago, but put it off for different reasons. I’m not sure if I’ll release the source code to it, or keep it closed, but the future will determine that. Keep an eye out for something about it though!
